The Kuttab Center
The Kuttab Center focuses on teaching the Holy Qur’an and Arabic language. The center consists of five departments. The name of each department is in tribute to a famous scholar of the Holy Qur’an and Arabic. They are:

(1) The Ibn al-Jazari Program: The Foundations of Arabic

(2) The Ibn Kathir Program: The Holy Qur’an & Tajwid

(3) The Ibn Malik Program: al-’Ulum al-’Arabiyyah - Nahw, Sarf, & Balaghah

(4) The Ibn Hisham Program: Conversational Arabic

(5) The Ibn Hajar Program: al-’Ulum al-Islamiyyah

Also, included in the Kuttab Center, is a department for tutoring in the other Islamic ‘ulum like fiqh, usul al-fiqh, hadith, tafsir, ‘ulum al-Qur’an, etc; this is called, The Ibn Hajar Program.

The Ibn al-Jazari Program: The Foundations of Arabic

This program is designed specifically for those unfamiliar with the proper pronunciation of Arabic letters and/or the Arabic script, like non-native speakers or children.

The Ibn al-Jazari Program establishes a solid foundation on which one can further build. In this program two texts are studied, the first is Qa’idah Nuraniyyahm, followed by Qa’idah Baghdadiyyah. For one wanting to start the quest of perfecting their recitation of the Holy Qur’an or mastery of the Arabic language this program is imperative to ensure a sound start.

The Ibn Kathir Program: The Holy Qur’an & Tajwid

This program is aimed at every Muslim who wants to recite the Holy Qur’an as it was revealed from Allah through the Angle Jibreel to the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم). This program was designed to achieve two primary objectives: (1) mastery of the most important principles of Qur’anic recitation or in Arabic ‘ilm al-tajwid [علم التجويد] and (2) applying the principles in select chapters and sections of the Holy Qur’an [التطبيق].

In The Ibn Kathir Program, there are three levels:

(A Level)

The theoretical aspects of tajwid are studied through the teacher’s explanation. Through reading the last half of the 30th Juz’, one will practically apply these principles.

(B Level)

Shaykh Sulayman al-Jamzuri’s Tuhfat al-Atfal is studied. The rules are applied by reading the first half of the 30th Juz’ and the entirety of the 29th Juz’.

(C Level)

Shaykh Muhammad Ibn al-Jazari’s Muqaddimah is studied and the rules applied by reading the 28th Juz’ of the Holy Qur’an.

The Ibn Malik Program: al-’Ulum al-’Arabiyyah – Nahw, Sarf, & Balaghah

In The Ibn Malik Program, there are three levels:

(Level A)

The subjects of Arabic grammar [علم النحو] and morphology [علم الصرف] are introduced. Nahw is studied from a text prepared by Dar al-Hadith, Mukhtasar fi al-Nahw. This text aims at imparting some of the most necessary rules in the subject.

Sarf is studied primarily through al-Tasrif al-Asasi, a work prepared by Dar al-Hadith; the work covers the primary verb stems [I-X] along with the most fundamental rules pertaining to the Arabic verbs’ declension.

Engaging the Arabic language and being able to apply its theoretical study is critical to one’s success in become fluent in reading. Here, application is realized through reading Shaykh Abu al-Hasan ‘Ali al-Nadwi’s Ahsan al-Qasas.

The first story, the story of Ibrahim, includes diacritical markings, while the remaining stories do not. Here, one can expect to learn the stories of Allah’s Prophets (عليهم السلام) and also increase comprehension and reading of unmarked Arabic script.

(Level B)

Nahw is studied from al-Muqaddimah al-Ajurrumiyyah and sarf is studied from Tasrif al-’Izzi.

The theoretical study is augmented by reading Abu al-Hasan ‘Ali al-Nadwi’s al-Sirah al-Muhammadiyyah. At this level, Faris Hawazin is also read. Both works, along with the teacher’s explanation, boost one’s ability to negotiate written Arabic by augmenting the theoretical rules acquired in Ajurrumiyyah and Tasrif al-’Izzi while solidifying the student’s reading comprehension.

(Level C)

At this level, the subject of balaghah is introduced through the means of al-Balaghah al-Wadihah. The rules of nahw, sarf, and balaghah are all put together through a linguistic explanation and analysis of Surah Yusuf along with Tafsir al-Jalalayn.

The Ibn Hisham Program: Conversational Arabic

The Ibn Hisham Program teaches conversational Arabic. This is a great course for learning the language as spoken by native Arabic speakers. Various texts may be used in this program such as the Medina Course Series, Arabiyyah Bayna Yadayk, and others.

More than being a mere reading of textbooks, the structure of this program allows one an opportunity to engage an Arabic speaking scholar, boosting both one’s speaking and listening skills.

The Ibn Hajar Program: al-’Ulum al-Islamiyyah

In this program, the Islamic ‘ulum are focused on for students eager to study in a one-on-one or small group setting. The syllabus will be planned according to the individual’s or group’s input, as well as the teacher’s.
